Numeracy and Mathematics

At Southdale, we believe that numeracy and mathematics are essential skills for learning, life and work. Children use numeracy every day to solve problems, make decisions and understand the world around them. Developing confidence and competence in mathematics enables our learners to participate fully in society and supports success across all areas of the curriculum.

We are committed to providing high-quality learning experiences that build a strong understanding of mathematical concepts while fostering curiosity, resilience and a positive attitude towards maths. As children progress through the school, they are given opportunities to develop their knowledge, skills and understanding through a broad, balanced and challenging curriculum.

Our approach to numeracy and mathematics includes:

  • Creating a positive and supportive learning environment where all children feel valued, confident and able to take risks in their learning.
  • Using active, engaging and interactive learning experiences to develop a deep understanding of mathematical concepts.
  • Developing mental agility and number sense through regular Number Talks and opportunities for mathematical discussion.
  • Using Assessment is for Learning strategies, including clear learning intentions, success criteria, effective questioning and feedback to support progress.
  • Delivering high-quality learning through the West Lothian Progression Pathways and Curriculum for Excellence Benchmarks.
  • Encouraging children to explain, justify and share their mathematical thinking.
  • Using digital technologies to enhance learning and support understanding.
  • Making meaningful links across the curriculum, helping children apply their numeracy skills in real-life and relevant contexts.
  • Developing problem-solving, reasoning and higher-order thinking skills through rich mathematical tasks and investigations.
  • Using a wide range of practical resources and concrete materials to support learning and deepen understanding.

Our goal is for every child to develop the confidence, knowledge and skills they need to become successful learners who can apply mathematics effectively in school and beyond. We want our children to see themselves as capable mathematicians, ready to embrace challenges and use their numeracy skills in everyday life.
