Physical Education and Sport
At Southdale, we recognise the important role that physical education, physical activity and sport play in supporting children's health, wellbeing and overall development. Through high-quality learning experiences, we aim to develop confident, motivated and physically literate learners who enjoy being active and understand the benefits of leading a healthy lifestyle.
All children receive a minimum of two hours of high-quality Physical Education each week. One lesson is delivered by our specialist PE teacher, Mrs Hughes, and the second is taught by the class teacher. This ensures that every child benefits from a broad and balanced PE programme that develops skills, confidence and enjoyment in a wide range of activities.
Our Physical Education curriculum provides opportunities for children to:
- Develop physical skills, coordination and fitness.
- Build confidence, teamwork and leadership skills.
- Learn the importance of resilience, determination and fair play.
- Participate in a wide range of sports, games, dance and movement activities.
- Develop an understanding of healthy, active lifestyles.
- Experience challenge, success and personal achievement.
- Set goals and reflect on their progress as learners.
We are extremely proud to have recently achieved the Gold Sport Scotland School Sport Award, recognising our commitment to promoting physical activity, sport and wellbeing across our school community.
Beyond the classroom, children have opportunities to further develop their interests and talents through a variety of extra-curricular sporting clubs and activities. These experiences encourage participation, build confidence and provide opportunities for children to represent the school, develop new skills and enjoy being active with their peers.
At Southdale, we strive to foster a lifelong love of physical activity, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to experience success, develop positive attitudes towards health and wellbeing, and enjoy the many benefits that sport and physical activity can bring.
