Interdisciplinary Learning (IDL) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

At Southdale, we believe that learning is most meaningful when children can make connections across different areas of the curriculum and apply their knowledge to real-life situations. Through Interdisciplinary Learning (IDL), children explore relevant, engaging and purposeful contexts that encourage creativity, curiosity, collaboration and problem-solving.

Our IDL approach is closely linked to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), helping children develop an understanding of global issues and their role as responsible citizens. Through a range of learning experiences, children are encouraged to think critically about the world around them and consider how their actions can make a positive difference within their school, local community and beyond.

Children have opportunities to explore themes such as:

  • Climate Action
  • Life Below Water and Life on Land
  • Good Health and Wellbeing
  • Quality Education
  • Responsible Consumption
  • Reduced Inequalities
  • Sustainable Communities
  • Global Citizenship

Learning is often delivered through engaging projects, investigations and collaborative challenges that combine skills and knowledge from a variety of curricular areas. These experiences encourage children to work together, ask questions, solve problems and communicate their ideas confidently.

Across the school, children participate in a range of activities linked to the Sustainable Development Goals, including outdoor learning, community partnerships, charitable initiatives, enterprise projects and environmental sustainability work. These experiences help our learners develop leadership skills, resilience, empathy and a strong sense of social responsibility.

Pupil voice plays an important role in shaping our interdisciplinary learning. Children are encouraged to share their ideas, identify issues that matter to them and take an active role in planning and leading change within our school community.

By connecting learning to real-world issues, we aim to inspire our children to become successful learners, confident individuals, responsible citizens and effective contributors who are ready to make a positive impact on the world around them.
