Outdoor Learning

Outdoor Learning

At Southdale, we believe that some of the best learning happens beyond the classroom walls. Learning outdoors is a valued part of our curriculum and provides children with meaningful opportunities to explore, investigate and develop new skills in real-life contexts. Come rain or shine, we embrace the many benefits that outdoor learning brings to children's health, wellbeing and education.

All children take part in a weekly outdoor learning session with Mr Reed, which is always a highlight of the week. These sessions provide opportunities for children to learn through hands-on experiences, develop resilience, work collaboratively and build confidence in the natural environment.

Outdoor learning supports learning across many areas of the curriculum, including:

  • Health and Wellbeing
  • Science and Social Studies
  • Literacy and Numeracy
  • Sustainability and Environmental Awareness
  • Teamwork and Leadership
  • Problem Solving and Creativity

Children regularly engage in activities such as nature investigations, den building, team challenges, environmental projects, storytelling, outdoor art and seasonal learning experiences. Through these activities, they develop important life skills while fostering a sense of curiosity and appreciation for the world around them.

Our outdoor learning programme also supports our commitment to sustainability and the Sustainable Development Goals, helping children understand how they can care for their environment and make a positive contribution to their local community.

We are fortunate to have enthusiastic learners who embrace outdoor learning in all types of weather. Whether exploring signs of seasonal change, working together to solve challenges or simply enjoying the benefits of learning in the fresh air, our children develop valuable skills and memories that will last a lifetime.
